I’ve been starting to use ModiPy more in the testlab, so it’s seeing some development work. I’ve also realised that I’ve forgotten a lot of its features, and the documentation is pretty poor. Yes, it’s only a beta product, but if I have trouble remembering how to use it, what hope does anyone else have?
To that end, I’ve added a QuickStart guide to help new users get the software and start using it. It’s actually quite easy to get started with the tool, so hopefully the new doco will help more people to start giving it a red hot go. I’ve found it really useful, and managed to get a quick changeset defined that automated the license installation on some NetApp simulators I have in the lab.
As an example of ModiPy’s hidden power, I completely forgot that I’d already added a a feature that allows you to load configuration information from a CSV file, and iterate over the rows of data as inputs to a change template. You can define named variables in changes that get their values substituted at runtime, and a CSV file is one of the sources you can use for those values. I added a ticket into the issue tracker before looking at the code, and lo and behold, I’d already implemented that feature. I’ve also apparently implemented the ability to fetch this information directly from a database, but I’d better write some test cases for that bit of code and make sure it works.
I’ll be putting out a point release of the software with the updates I’ve made in the last couple of days, so stay tuned for more news on this neat bit of software.
Oh, did I mention it’s available free of charge? No? Oh.
It’s available free of change.
Grab it now from the ModiPy website.
